Balram Purnima

August 9 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Sri Balarama Purnima is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) of the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Shravana.

Significance of Shri Balarama Purnima

The significance of Shri Balarama Purnima lies in the divine connection between Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna. As an elder brother, Balarama expresses the force that upholds and nurtures Shri Krishna’s mission on Earth. Devotees believe that worshipping Balarama on this day bestows them strength, courage, and protection from negative influences. The day is also a reminder of the importance of sibling bonds and the virtues of loyalty and support in brotherhood.

Story of Shri Balarama Purnima

The story of Shri Balarama Purnima is deeply rooted in ancient scriptures. According to the legends, Lord Balarama was born to Vasudeva and Devaki, the same parents as Lord Krishna. However, due to the cruel rule of Kansa, Balarama was transferred to the womb of Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva, for his protection. This divine intervention saved Balarama and allowed him to grow up in Gokul with Sri Krishna. Together, they performed many divine pastimes (Leelas) that are still celebrated by devotees today.

How to Celebrate Shri Balarama Purnima?

The celebration of Shri Balarama Purnima involves various rituals that show devotion and respect. Devotees commence their day by having a holy bath in Brahma Muhurta (between 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM). They follow it by fasting until the Purnima Tithi ends. The temples exclusively dedicated to Lord Balarama are beautifully decorated. Devotees perform special prayers and kirtans (devotional songs). Devotees also recite the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures that highlight the virtues and teachings of Lord Balarama. Offering fruits, flowers, and sweets to the deity is a common practice, which symbolizes the purity and devotion.
